Ayurvedic Diet & Lifestyle for Fatty Liver (NAFLD)
Fatty liver is reversible — Ayurveda clears the channel, restarts agni, and lets the liver decongest in 3–6 months of consistent work.
Do these sound familiar?
- ☐ Often silent — discovered on routine ultrasound or LFT
- ☐ Mild discomfort or fullness in the right upper abdomen
- ☐ Fatigue, energy crashes, especially mid-afternoon
- ☐ Belly fat, weight gain around the waist
- ☐ Indigestion, bloating, gas
- ☐ Skin issues — pigmentation, dullness
- ☐ Brain fog, low motivation
- ☐ Elevated ALT / AST / GGT on blood work
What's actually going on, in classical terms
Dosha: kapha + pitta
The liver — yakrit in Ayurveda — is the seat of pitta and the central metabolic organ. When agni is weak and the diet is heavy / processed / sweet, fat accumulates in the liver tissue itself. This is non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD). It is silent for years, then shows up on a routine scan.
The good news: fatty liver is one of the most reversible "chronic" conditions in Ayurveda when the patient commits. The liver has remarkable regenerative capacity once the inflow of damage stops. Diet, daily movement, weight loss, and specific bitter / astringent foods do the bulk of the work.
Patients usually see liver enzymes (ALT, AST, GGT) start moving in 6–8 weeks and ultrasound improve in 4–6 months. Grade 1 fatty liver usually resolves; Grade 2 / 3 needs more sustained work but still responds.
What to eat & what to avoid
✓ Eat
- Bitter and astringent foods: methi, karela, neem leaves, kale, broccoli
- Whole grains: jowar, bajra, ragi, oats, barley — avoid white rice / maida
- Moong dal, masoor dal, sprouts — daily, lightly cooked
- Leafy greens: palak, methi, bathua, mustard greens
- Beetroot, carrot, gourds (lauki, parwal, tinda), pumpkin
- Spices that wake agni: jeera, ajwain, methi, hing, ginger, turmeric, black pepper
- Triphala 1 tsp at night with warm water (after consultation)
- Lemon water with a pinch of rock salt on empty stomach
- Brisk 45-min walk daily — the single biggest non-dietary intervention
✗ Avoid
- Alcohol — even small amounts. Period.
- Refined sugar, sweets, soft drinks, fruit juices
- Maida, biscuits, packaged snacks, instant noodles
- Deep-fried food, samosa, pakora, chips
- Red meat and processed meats
- Excess dairy — especially paneer, cheese, full-fat milk
- Late-night dinners — finish by 7 PM
- Sedentary days — even a 20-min walk after each meal helps
What to practise
Daily yoga is part of the standard Ayurvedic prescription for this condition.
- 🧘 Surya Namaskar — 8–12 rounds daily, slow + deep breath
- 🧘 Kapalbhati pranayama — 5–10 minutes for liver stimulation
- 🧘 Ardha Matsyendrasana (seated spinal twist) — directly massages the liver
- 🧘 Bhujangasana, Dhanurasana, Salabhasana — abdominal organ stimulation
- 🧘 Pavanmuktasana — releases gas, supports digestion
- 🧘 Vakrasana (sitting twist) — daily, holds 30 sec each side
- 🧘 Anulom-Vilom — 10 min for parasympathetic activation
Common questions
Can fatty liver really reverse with diet?
Yes — in most patients. Grade 1 fatty liver usually resolves within 4–6 months of consistent diet, walking, and weight loss. Grade 2 / 3 takes longer but responds. Liver enzymes often improve within 6–8 weeks.
Is alcohol completely off the table?
Yes, while you're reversing fatty liver. Even small amounts undo the work. After the ultrasound and LFTs normalise, occasional alcohol is a personal call, but daily drinking will bring fatty liver right back.
Do I need to lose weight?
If you're overweight, even a 5–7% weight reduction makes a major difference to fatty liver. The diet + walking protocol naturally produces this without aggressive calorie cuts.
Are 'liver detox' supplements useful?
Most are marketing. The liver detoxes itself when you stop overloading it. Targeted herbal support (triphala, kutki, bhumyamalaki) can help in specific patterns — Dr. Gaganpreet decides this in your consultation rather than blanket-prescribing.
Can I eat fruits?
Whole fruit yes — apple, pear, papaya, guava, berries, pomegranate. Avoid fruit juices and very sweet fruits (mango, banana, grapes) in excess until the liver clears.
How long until LFTs normalise?
ALT and AST usually start moving in 6–8 weeks. Full normalisation is 3–6 months in most patients. GGT (alcohol-sensitive) responds fastest once alcohol stops.
I have fatty liver + diabetes — does the same plan work?
Yes — and the two reinforce each other. The PCOS / diabetes / belly-fat / fatty-liver protocols overlap significantly. Dr. Gaganpreet integrates them in your specific plan.
I live abroad and can't get Indian herbs — can I still reverse fatty liver?
Yes. The 80% of the work is diet + walking + alcohol-stop. Herbs are the 20% finisher. Dr. Gaganpreet adapts to what you can buy locally.
